The H2RenT (H2RenT stands for Hydrogen Cleaning Trucks) project was recently awarded a grant from the Demonstration of Climate Technologies and Innovations in Transport (DKTI Transport) scheme. The aim of this scheme is to accelerate product development in the transport sector from 2017 to 2021. With help from the DKTI scheme, H2RenT is building 6 electric household waste trucks that run on hydrogen. The 6 hydrogen-powered garbage trucks will be tested at various locations throughout the Netherlands. In this way, a maximum number of users, such as municipalities and collection companies, can become acquainted with hydrogen technology. The hydrogen-powered garbage trucks are 100% electric. Instead of charging electricity through charging stations, the vehicle refuels hydrogen as "fuel." The hydrogen is converted into electricity to drive the electric motors. This ensures a long range, no emissions of harmful gases, less noise pollution and no dependence on charging stations. Hydrogen can be refueled in more and more places in the Netherlands. With these features, hydrogen-powered garbage trucks are ideal for use in densely populated areas. H2RenT The H2RenT project is coordinated by WaterstofNet, the vehicles are built by E-Trucks Europe. For the after-sales service, Truckland, Van Tilburg - Bastianen, Autobedrijven ESA, Autobedrijf Loven and De Burgh are involved in the project. These truck companies are investing in staff training and renewal of the workshops in order to be prepared for a large roll-out of hydrogen-powered vehicles. At the end of February 2020, the 'kick-off meeting' took place at E-Trucks Europe, where all partners were present. Experience E-Trucks Europe has already built household waste vehicles running on hydrogen in previous projects. These vehicles have been tested at Cure in Eindhoven and Baetsen in Best, among others. The results were very positive and this is now creating the space to build hydrogen-powered household waste trucks on a larger scale. About WaterstofNet WaterstofNet develops and realizes - together with industry and governments - projects and roadmaps around sustainable use of hydrogen for zero-emission transport and energy storage. The focus is on Flanders and the Netherlands.
