"Schlüter baut die Grosse Vier!" This slogan appeared on the brochure of the 2nd generation "S" series. With this "S" Series, Schlüter began a journey of over 30 years, a journey full of evolution and especially challenges. The hood is one of the proofs that they thought in Freising "what is good stays, what can be better, must be better". However, it remained unchanged since then until the end in '93 except for details! With the arrival of the S450, Schlüter's first tractor where a frame was built around the engine, a new engine also entered the program, the "SD". An engine that would have many more successors and updates.... By juggling with different sizes of pistons and bushings, Schlüter was able to develop many variations in power output from a limited number of engine blocks. The 2nd generation of S-tractors would eventually consist of 4 tractors. The S450 was, as I wrote above, the first of the series. With pistons of 105mm, this 3 cylinder achieved a power output of about 42hp. To offer a smaller tractor, Schlüter installed 100mm pistons in the same block. This small tractor, then the smallest in the range, with 34hp was named S350. However, the trend toward larger engines had long been set. A 4 cylinder was inevitable, so from the experience with the "SD W3" cylinder engine a 4 cylinder was developed. This was logically named SD W4, where between the SD (Schlüter Diesel) and the W (Wassergekühlt) the diameter of the piston was placed. Therefore, the S650 received an SD 105 W4 engine with 56hp installed. While developing this type of tractor, the arrival of a new revolution in the world of agricultural tractors, namely front-wheel drive, was also taken into account. The S650 was the first Schlüter to offer this option. The S350 and S450 soon followed, the "V" in type became a reality.... This did not yet clarify the slogan.... In 1964, the new flagship joined the fleet. The S900 sees the light of day, with SD 105 W6 engine. Because ZF was not far enough along with the developments of a suitable front axle, buyers who wanted one with a powered front axle had to wait almost a year for their ordered tractor! Many were patient, because 65 of the 107 tractors built were ordered as "S900V". In fact, the S Series had another honor. To promote these tractors, from then on Schlüter organized its famous field days, which was named "Landtechnik von Morgen." In the beginning, these field days were held 2 times a year, later still every 2 years. This 2-day event was held at Schlüter's farm, where some 130ha were available to present tractors. The first day was for invited guests, the following day anyone who wanted to could visit this event and test drive (read for some people dreaming away) a Schlüter tractor. This event also allowed many manufacturers to present their new machines. To get the name "Bärenstark" tacked on, at one of these field days an S900 with 4-scissor plow was demonstrated. Not crazy enough for Schlüter, because they tied an S650 behind it with a 3-scissor plow. The only drawback to this demonstration was that the S650 had to keep the engine running to oil the depth control of the hitch and power steering. This caused many visitors to wonder whether the S650 was not pulling a bit. But, as I wrote above, the S stood at the cradle of a 30-year history.... The S was succeeded in 1966 by the Super series, a series in which Schlüter went all out in terms of developments.... and that until the end in 1993.
