Sometimes you take on a project that you think you can make a nice living from but whose ultimate question is whether you got anything out of it. Like this load of poplars. There was a whole batch of poplars next to a piece of land we farm, next to a sizable house. We got talking to the occupant, an old forester, and heard that those trees could go. The land, house and forest all belong to Natuurmonumenten so we consulted them: if we did all the work we could have the trees. The trees were not all straight, so the crane had to be brought in to get them in the right direction. In the end we took out about 35 cubic meters of wood and just as many chippings, and sold it all immediately. I don't think it was a loss but a profit? I doubt it. On the other hand, we have now lost a lot of shade and gained a few meters of land. And it's also kind of fun to cut wood ourselves for a change, we've been selling all the coppice in logs for years dis it had been a surprisingly long time since I had cut down many trees. Occupational therapy, in other words!
