April 26, 2023 Photo of a Deutz-Fahr Agrotron 85 mk2 working on tulip headers. Also been about 5 years; that we head the tulips this way. The van Dijke head roundel works just fine. The only thing is to keep the machine flat and at the right height. Behind the dike you see in the background logs the Oosterschelde; a natura-2000 area. Here almost all of my wife's farm is in the area of 1km from this area. Nobody knows what consequences this will have for the future. For us, at least, it has caused us to be less tightly focused on environmental goals. All the rules are just a basis for new rules. We do stay within the law, but we have moved away from a lot of above-legal nonsense. Global-Gap, Planet-Proof,Bronze, silver or gold in the CAP: First see what it brings and if not good guarantees: Figure it out nicely with your demands. This year we had to invest quite a bit to get gold for the cap. We chose not to do that. The premium per hectare on top of the standard CAP compensation could well be 200 euros per hectare. This 200 euros is not guaranteed over 2023 and far from certain. So you are counting yourself rich with money you may never get. We have chosen to do what we are good at: Growing crops. No longer participating in all kinds of certificates and rules gives us more job satisfaction, less stress, more time for important things and financially more income and less costs. Many arable farmers with us have also realized this. Crops will disappear or marginalize (chicory, liatris) Other crops will eventually yield more (food high in fats, carbohydrates and proteins). Now in bulbs, things are moving a bit in the direction of certification. Tulip farming is about 25 years behind arable farming in terms of certification. There too, just like 25 years ago in arable farming, compulsory certification is being imposed under pressure from the market, without any benefit to the grower. For the time being we will continue to grow tulips because it is financially attractive, but if they come up with too much madness we would like to be able to stop that too. That's kind of the reason why investing in cultivation is slow with us. If financiers get a fat hand in the policy we have to implement, we would like to be able to choose which way it goes.
