Started a new hobby this week, feeding fresh grass. This way the cows can at least transition a little slower from silage to fresh grass than when we put them out like this. And this way we will get a nice short pasture a bit sooner instead of the thick grass that is there now. But I expect the biggest benefit in the fall, hopefully we can improve the protein efficiency a bit then. Because we can't feed them as much in the field, the cows actually get too much protein from the fresh grass in the fall. With the combination of a little earlier in the barn and barn feeding we hope to be able to steer more while continuing to use the protein from the fresh grass. We'll see what it becomes; the front mower wasn't such a big investment, but if you don't try it, you never know.
