Photo of a Mowag unknown/other, rigged as a fire truck. MOWAG began in 1950 as the private company of engineer Walter Ruf. The first successes were the development and production of more than 1,600 weapon carriers, the MOWAG t1 4x4, for the Swiss army. Various orders followed from Germany. Among others, 750 armored special vehicles of the Roland type for the German Border Guard were produced under license by the German arms industry. In addition to this, MOWAG also produced for the civilian market. In 1958, for example, it built a light 50cc scooter called Volksroller. It also specialized in converting Dodge and DeSoto vehicles into ambulance, fire truck and other special vehicles. The company further devoted itself to the development and construction of armored wheeled vehicles. Still today, the company is one of the most renowned manufacturers worldwide in the field of wheeled and tracked vehicles. More than twelve thousand MOWAG vehicles of the Piranha, Eagle and Duro types are in service with defense forces worldwide.
