Volvo Trucks starts assembly of batteries for electric trucks in Ghent Volvo Trucks is opening its first-ever battery assembly plant. The plant, located in Ghent, Belgium, will supply ready-to-use batteries for Volvo Trucks' all-electric heavy-duty trucks. "This investment demonstrates our strong commitment to electrifying transportation. By 2030, at least 50 percent of all trucks we sell worldwide will be electric and by 2040 we will be a carbon-neutral company," said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. At the new battery factory, cells and modules from Samsung SDI will be assembled into battery packs tailored for Volvo Trucks' heavy-duty electric series: Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX. Series production will start in the third quarter of this year. Shorter lead times and more circularity Each battery pack has a capacity of 90 kWh, and a transportation company can choose to have up to six battery packs (540 kWh) in a truck. The number of battery packs depends on the specific deployment and desired payload. "By integrating the battery assembly process into our production, we can reduce lead times for our customers and secure high-quality batteries, while making a positive contribution to the circular economy," said Roger Alm. Volvo Trucks' batteries are designed so that they can later be reconditioned, refurbished and reused. The Ghent plant itself is powered by 100 percent renewable energy. Electric solutions for most transportation needs European production of three all-electric heavy-duty models will begin this year. Volvo Trucks will thus offer a total of six electric truck models worldwide, from urban distribution and waste handling to regional transport and construction work. "We started series production of electric trucks as early as 2019 and are leading the market in both Europe and North America. With the rapid development of charging networks and improvements in battery technology, I am convinced we are going to see a rapid transformation of the entire truck industry in the very near future," Roger Alm concluded.
